Facebook’s official company statistics outline the breakdown of the sites over 400 million active users. While the site points out about 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States, it doesn’t dive deeper into the U.S. numbers.

To find out more about the average American Facebook user and how he or she compares to the average American, research was made. After crunching the numbers and comparing the data, this is what was found.

New banner tool for Craig’s List

We added a new tool to the Craig’s List Advanced system that allows you to upload banners (images– we recommend using .jpg) to the system and then using them on the fly at the time of the posting.

Why use different banners?

The banners allow you to do many different things with the postings.

You can completely set the “tone” of the ad. For example you can have a “Special finance” banner for vehicles under $10K, one that says “in house” for units under $5K, “we are the 4X4 kings” on your trucks, CPO banner, etc.

They also allow you to advertise your cars under a “different face”. For example you can advertise in one area as “XYZ Honda”, in another area as “Everett XWZ dealer”, and even as “The King of Gas Saving Cars” if that is what you want to do.

The banners also allow you to “link” different postings to different areas of your web site. For example you can easily get a link that shows all your trucks and direct customers to just that page. You can also direct special finance ads to a quick credit app. Because you can have multiple links, for those of you that really want to spend them time you can also link each area for each banner to a different landing page and that way being able to measure the clicks from each specific posting area.

How it works

First, load the banners.

  1. On the Craig’s List section of your Diamondlot tool, click on “Advanced Used Posting to CL”
  2. Then click on “Post to Craigs List” on any vehicle
  3. Now click on “Upload Custom Header JPGs”

Second, load the URLs:

  • On the Posting page, click on “show custom links”
  • A new link will appear ” click here to add custom links”, click on it
  • enter full URLs in the boxes. i.e.: http://www.loginpgi.com
  • Click “update” when you are done

How to use it:

Now when you go to post you will have the banners that you uploaded into the system available as a drop down menu in the “custom heather jpg” drop down box. As you select one of them, you have also to select on the the custom links that you added. We built it this way so you can use different combinations of banners + URL’s in different postings.

Different combination of banners + URL’s will allow you to fine tune whether a paticular type of advertising brings a better cinversion ratio if it goes straight to the inventory or just to a credit app., etc.

Banner dimesions:

  • jpg
  • 72 DPI
  • 1050X350 or 1050X500 or 1050X750

Note: If you are in our posting program we are already creating banners for you. We will email these and get campaigns approved and coordiated with the manager in charge of the program.

System fixes and updates

Posting page continue button added:

Simple but very useful to cut down on time. Now there is a continue button at the top of the posting page so you dont have to scroll down the page if you are doing multi-postings and have your settings ready. (thanks to Good James).

Batch update of prices:

We added a “certified” column indicator so you know which cars are CPO and you can price them accordingly.

Batch update of comments:

We added a “certified” column indicator so you know which cars are CPO and you cab add comments accordingly.

17 IM/Chat Acronyms Everyone Needs to Know

There are differing opinions within the ContactAtOnce! user community regarding the proactive use of IM/chat shorthand when chatting with a prospective customer, but whether you use shorthand or not you can be sure that some of your prospective customers will. Are you prepared? Can you at least understand their messages, even if you choose not to use type acronyms yourself?

This post provides a short list of the most commonly used IM/chat shorthand, and a link to an exhaustive list that may prove useful should a prospective customer ever surprise you with an unusual one.

The most commonly used shorthand abbreviations and their meanings are:

ASAP – As Soon As Possible
BTW – By The Way
BWM – Bear With Me
BRB – Be Right Back
CM – Call Me
IDK – I Dont Know
IMO – In My Opinion
K – Okay
LOL – Laughing Out Loud
OTP – On The Phone
TY – Thank You
TTYL – Talk To You Later
YW – Youre Welcome
:) – Smiley Face
;) – Winking Smiley Face
:-0 – Shock and Surprise Face
:( – Sad Face

Billed as The Largest List of Text Message Shorthand, Netlingo is a site that you may want to bookmark just in case a prospective customer hits you with an acronym you dont recognize.

And if you have a common acronym not listed above, by all means please leave a comment! TY

Yago’s comment:

I did check the Netlingo site and realized that I knew much less shorthands than what I thought. Check it out, it will make you feel old (because probably my kids actually know all of them).

The one that stuck with me:

CHA – Click Here Asshole

Great to send links to a friend challenging you, bad to send links about cars to clients!

February 9, 2010 – Dealer News

Dear Dealers,

We are still busy programing some new things for the system that we will implement in the next couple of weeks so I dont’s have any major system updates other than just a few fixes.

Last week we worked on implemeting a SMS Text message system in the magazine and it was printed on Tuesday (the good news is that it works!).

Please email me with any questions.

We hope this helps!

Free sites? Need dealer’s approval

Traditionaly we will always set up any free feeds requested by a website as we have belived these to be positive advertising and exposure for the dealers.

We have recently encountered 2 issues that require a change of policy:

  • Some dealers didn’t feel confortable with some of the free sites.
  • Some sites marketted cars on Craigs List for a sales person without the dealer knowing.

The first issue is hard to spot since it depends on each particualr dealer point of view. The second issue is easier to spot (usually requested on a by dealer basis) and it brought other problems such as flagging for duplication, different prices on Craigs List, etc.

An easy fix is to require dealer authorization for any feeds, nothing fancy; just send me an email, click on the links we provide (like the one 2 articles below for Credit Kings), or sign something with the website you sign for so they can fax it to us.

We that this measure will provide more control to the dealer and avoid feeds issues.

Note: We don’t charge for feeds at all, so they are solely set up for the dealer’s benefit. We also don’t take money from any website company unless we decide to represent their products or merge our systems in which in that case we fully disclose it and present it as our product to sell/maintain/represent.

Poll: Need your feedback

From now on I will try to get some feedback from a larger number of dealers before I make changes in the system so I don’t always focus on just a few opinions for changes. Please participate, all you have to do is read the question and click on one of the links.

The issue:

Marketting on sites like CL requires a different price strategy. You can’t have the same prices as what you have on Autotrader.com for example. CL is used in many cases as a “sure shot”, you can post a car right now for a certain price and the phone will ring inmediatelly.

The benefits:

It will give dealers more control on how the inventory shows on different sites and give more control over strategy.

The bad things:

You will have to manage another price field. You will have to check for those cars when you sell it for the higuer price to a client that came form your website for example.

How does it work right now?

The system grabs whatever price is on the Internet Price field and brings that to CL. Dealers have the abilty to change the CL price on the fly (just for that posting) but the system doesn’t store it.

Should we have a specific field in the system for Craig’s List price?

YES <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>> NO

Craigs List accounts getting stolen

We had a few dealers complaining that they had cars that didn’t belong to them posted in their accounts so we checked the problem.

Since CL installed security measures to avoid spam, having a working account is kind of a privilege for many people–it takes hard work to get things set and done.

We found sites that will do a “pop under” so when you navigate thru the windows opened in your computer you may use one of this fake account log ins and think that you are getting in your CL account.

We took screen shots, then Jim put together a nice page that shows the differences between the real one and the fake one, click here to see it.

New FREE site: Please approve

There is a new free site called Credit Kings of WA. They specialize on working with dealers to create inventory specific leads by working with social media and networking web sites.

They have allowed us to send inventory to their system for free.

For more information abot their programs please call:

Customer service: 1-866-906-7602

To approve this feed please click here, your inventory will not be otherwise sent to that site.

PGI is not affiliated in any way with any free sites unless noted.

TEXT Message technology implemented on PGILIST

Seattle AutoSales.com

All dealers running on PGILIST magazine will get this feature implemented for free (actually it is coming out in tomorrow’s amagzine).

As you can see in the screenshot, each car has an individual barcode to text that will give the customer all the photos of the car that you have in Diamondlot, as well as your email, phone number, web address, and physical location. It also comes with a little “contact app” included.

The system also has a code in the top right corner of the page that will give the customer your entire inventory on their cell phone.

All pages, displays, etc are mobile ready and will display properly on most smart phones (my friend Keith still has a flip phone but that is a completelly different issue).

Every time a customer text a car or the inventory pages to view them on their cell phone you will also get an email from the Autobase server with the customer’s cell phone number and the car they are looking at.

We just merged print with your Internet database so you can get a customer’s cell hpone from a magazine and into your email.

New distribution for PGILIST

Tully's CoffeeThe goal for PGILIST is to offer an alternative and affordable media to advertise your inventory on places where auto magazines have never been before.

This week we started distributing at Tully’s coffee, Seattle Best, selected Star Bucks, Hospitals, independent coffee shops, and the ferry system. PGILIST will be also distributed inside the Seattle Weekly as an insert in selected locations (they print 100,000/week and we “only” print 10,000/week, so not every Seattle Weekly will have our insert).

Yago’s comment on the distribution:

Dealer ask me why have 2 magazines? The short answer is that we felt that we could not reach everyone with just one publication.

The same way we have the Seattle Times, The Herald, The News Tribune, etc, the dealers deserved having another outlet to reach customers in different parts of the Puget Sound as well as to be able to have a presence in areas where the automotive industry had never been before.

The Auto Book team has done a great job covering the more traditional market with the most extensive distribution you can get as well as establishing the highest quality magazine in the market. I strongly believe based on what I see that we do (we bend the impossible to get more out TheAutobook for our clients) that it will be the only high quality magazine for dealers to consider when advertising.

What I’m looking for PGILIST is to provide dealers that are successful with print the ability to reach more clients and augment their current print presence. I’m also interested on providing customers with a magazine that they may chose to grab for other reasons than just going after a car: Just to browse the market while they ride the ferry, drink a coffee, look for service information, etc and with that bring more eyes to your business and inventory. Not every person buys a car when they need it, in many cases they buy a car when they see something that catches their eye or that pushes them over that edge to make the decision. I want to be on those places and available to show them your inventory while at their leisure time.

Internet Flag system incorporated in both magazines

We are working on the feeds to give the system the ability to transfer the flags that you use on Diamondlot to the print team when they build the ads.

What this means is if you flag a car in Diamondlot as “NAVIGATION” or “HEMI” it will be on your web site as well as in the magazine. One step takes care of two ads spaces; Internet and print.

We are also working so flags like “Internet Special” transfer to the magazine as “Special Price” or “Managers’ Special” for example.

The flags will be used by the magazines as “banners” in the lower right corner of the photo. This is just one more option that you have as you can continue providing the banners to your magazine rep that same way you have always done it should you prefer to do that.

CPO data also transfers to print:

We are also setting up the system to transfer CPO data into the print teams. First of all, it will make sure they don’t miss adding the CPO logos to the cars and second it will allow us to mark them properly in the classifieds section for PGILIST.
